The Grief Watch and Dougy Center benefit concert in Portland on Feb 18th fast approaches.  We have been blessed by upcoming coverage in the Oregonian next Monday, Willamette Week on Wednesday, and an interview on KINK radio, as well as donations of time, money and services from a number of Portlanders and Northwest businesses.  If you plan to attend I highly recommend going to Brown Paper Tickets now and pre-purchasing before everyonefinds out.

Proceeds from the show go directly to support the work of Grief Watch and The Dougy Center.  Both organizations are priceless resources for people and families dealing with grief and loss.  Most of us already have - and all of us will - lose loved ones.  The impact of supportive groups like these cannot be understated.

 

I'm pleased to announce that Chris Kokesh will be the special guest opener for the evening's concert.  Any of you who have heard her song "Lucy" - seen here on YouTube - know that she has the right heart for the job.  Many of you have come to know and love this talented songwriter, fiddler, singer and guitarist with me over these past few years.  I'm delighted to have her there and will join her as part of the opening set as well.

 

Lincoln Crockett & Enemies will headline the event - this is music the way I hear and feel it: acoustic, electric, jazz, bluegrass, dynamic, virtuosic, improvised and limitless.  Enemies features my most frequent collaborators of the past few years - Jim McKeon on guitar, Peter Schwimmer on banjo & mandolin, Tyler Smith on bass, Andy Love on drums, and introducing Jeff Baxter on keys.  (Who knows, Chris might even add some harmony & fiddle, she's been known to do that sort of thing.)

 

This event is very close to our hearts musically and as a benefit show, but it is also a memorial for the one year anniversary of the birth and death of our son Joseph Phoenix. We have 300 tickets to sell and we want to sell them all. In January I'm genuinely excited to be playing the Lighthouse Concert Series with the incomparable Beth Wood.  Beth is an award-winning, Eugene-based songwriter who has been featured on OPB's Oregon ArtBeat and a friend I've come to know and love from Sisters Songcamp.  She just lights up the stage with her 100 watt, barefoot self.

I'm proud and excited to announce that I've partnered up with Dan Eichler - formerly music booker for Borders Books and currently booker for Mississippi Pizza in Portland, OR - to take over my day-to-day booking and promotion workload.  Dan is a facile connecting to people as I am putting together chords. 

Dan making it possible not only for me to devote more time to my family and healing practice, but he shares my vision for my career - regional, rooted, sustainable, enjoyable, remarkable - AND it just so happens is first cousin's with one of my oldest friends west of the Mississippi River.  What more can I ask for?

It's October (wow, really?) and that means its time for the one-of-a-kind Birdfest & Bluegrass Festival  Over the past several years I've had the pleasure of playing as part of the fest with Cross-eyed Rosie, The Josh Cole Band, and Chris Kokesh (twice) but this year is different.  

 

The organizers invited me to be the featured artist at a special show at the Old Liberty Theater on Friday, October 7th.  At 7 pm I'll kick it off with a solo/duo set trading off guitar and mandolin duties with guest picker Nicolas Miranda.  For the second set we'll be joined by fellow Cross-eyed Rosie alum Jason Mellow on bass and Peter Schwimmer on banjo. 

 

I first pulled together these three of Portland's finest bluegrass pickers in December 2010 and formed the project sometimes referred to as Bloom Out Inside.  Go ahead, say it: "Blue Mountainside", yeah, like that.  We call it 'Indie Chamber Bluegrass' and it is a whole ton of talent and real musical fun.

Hi Everyone,

 

It feels like its been SO long since I've played for most of you!  And I guess it's true, it's been a good summer here in Portland, and I've been doing more work musically behind the scenes than onstage.  So let's make each opportunity count.

 

Chris Kokesh and I have played dozens of shows together over the past several years.  She is hands-down one of the finest professional performing songwriters in the region, a fine fiddler, and in my opinion something of a Portland treasure.  Am I over-selling?  I'm excited for this Friday!

 

We don't get to play together as often these days so it's really a special occasion when we reunite.  While I've been growing my practice and playing with Bloom Out Inside & SPB, Chris has been touring in support of her fantastic album October Valentine.  This Friday at Portland's beautiful Alberta Rose Theatre we'll be kicking off a great night of Northwest music in a co-bill with Eugene's favorite dance/party band The Sugar Beets!

If you sit around and think long enough about how satisfying it is to play at the Alberta Street Pub, it will happen.  Alas, if only the sitting around part were true!  But the rest is:Strangled Darlings and the Pub here in Portland invited Nicolas Miranda and I to join them for some genre-bending, string-based shenanegans and hijinks this coming Saturday.  Low cover, hi-flying fun.  Duck!  Nicolas and I start things off at 9:30.

 

The following following Friday I want to introduce you to a new friend of mine, Nicole Berke.  Nicole and I teach together at Sound Roots and in a talented pool, she is hands-down one of the most talentedest.  Her effortlessly soulful voice and rich piano playing will kick off the evening, followed by the wide-open electric fusion of Lincoln Crockett's SPB, the newly rechristened foursome behind my album Play In The Yard.  We're gonna let it all hang out.

This Saturday, June 4, I'm going to let you in on a little secret - I have a new band: Bloom Out Inside.  Nicolas Miranda on guitar, Jason Mellow on bass, Peter Schwimmer on banjo and I have developed high-level psychic 'chamber stringband' chemistry and our own genre: Prograzz.

 

After Bloom Out Inside's first performance back in December booking agent Daniel Eichler called us "The best thing I've seen since the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival."  We're heading into the studio later in June to make a one-of-a-kind album due out later this year.  This will be our 3rd public performance, the first since March and we want you to be a part of it.  Tell your friends.  We're growing something special.  Come see what blooms.

Hi Everyone,

When this Saturday opened up suddenly at Vino Vixen's in Portland they called us first.  The boys in the electric band and I have always made real music there.  The atmosphere in that room gets along famously with what we do.  To make things more interesting, electric guitar guru Jim McKeon is otherwise occupied, so in his stead we've invited acoustic guitarist and mandolin whiz-ard Nicolas Miranda to join myself, Tyler Smith on bass and Andy Love on drums.  Solo duo, trio and quartet combos will erupt, as will the music.  Color me excited.  Short notice but hope to see you there, this will be a unique evening in my musical world.

In other April news, McMinnville, Oregon, I'm finally coming back down to Hotel Oregon with Jim McKeon on Friday the 29th.  And Everyone in the Portland area be ready for the James Faretheewell CD Release on April 30th at Artichoke Music.  This will be an intimate and beautiful songwriter night not to be missed.  More on everything below and more still at my Calendar.

Happy 2011!  We made it!  The earth hasn't melted down (entirely) and despite a seemingly consistent amount of suffering in 2010, by and large most people weren't blown up last year.  It always warms my heart to see us humans makin' it on our own like this.  Nice work, everyone!
 
As the winter rolls through the Northern Hemisphere in its miriad of predominantly cold and wet forms I am reminded of the paint scheme on the inside of a Starbucks.  No, really.  When I'm out in the cold and happen by those earthy shades it always looks warm and inviting.  So in this time of year - and all of it thereafter, too - may your heart be painted like the inside of a Starbucks for any passersby out in the cold.
 
"eBand"?  Its still Jim, Tyler, Andy and I electrified and plugged in.  Honestly, we've never settled on a name amongst ourselves so why start now?  We'll be in Gearhart, OR at McMenamin's Sand Trap this Friday (1/21) and in Portland at Vino Vixens (1/22).  You too?  Sweet!
 
Thanks to everyone who came and made my month of happy hours at the White Eagle in Portland so much fun.  In spite of my careful planning there was something surprising and different every week including a duo one night with Nicolas Miranda and another great night with Chris Kokesh.  Chris and I especially would like to do these again in 2011 and are just looking for the place!  Any suggestions?

Hi All My Angels & Devils, 

Wow, when it rains it really pours around here! In addition to the sky, my December is just full of music and I couldn't be more happy about it.  Anyone else want to throw a gig at me? 

 

We kick off with something really close to my heart.  After the picking circle late-night at last month's Alberta Rose show I'm all fired up.  For all of you who love truly excellent bluegrass and acoustic music as much as I do then you must catch the show THIS SATURDAY at 9 pm at Mississippi Pizza.  I've been wanting to do something like this for a long time!  I'll be joined by guitarist Nicolas Miranda, banjo player Peter Schwimmer and bassist Jason Mellow for a spontaneous romp through high-end bluegrass, back-breaking traditionals, mind-bending originals, playful covers and acoustic music.  If you catch one show this month, make it this one!  Details at the top of the list below!

Thanks to everyone who made last month's cd release show for PLAY IN THE YARD so much fun and such a success!  We're continuing EVERY THURSDAY this month starting 12/9 with Electric Happy Hours at the White Eagle, 5:30 - 7:30.  Guitarist Jim McKeon and Bassist Tyler Smith will be there, then on Friday 12/10 we'll be a quartet again when drummer Andrew Love joins us to swing back down to Salem's Boon's Treasury.  Swing by and join us for a pint. 

I'm also doing something that's become rare lately: playing three solo shows!  The first at Rock Creek Tavern 12/8, then on December 19 I’ll be back at Mississippi Pizza, this time with Seattle's Thistle & Rose!  We'll be doing three important things: playing a show on a Sunday, playing an early (6 – 8 pm) all-ages show, and I'll be playing a full solo set.  The third solo set will be a the Solstice Woodfire Cafe in Bingen, WA for their annula Winter Solstice party.  I hear there will be fire dancers, woa!  Playing solo is still the essence of all the music that I make, and I hope you'll join me for one of these evenings.

Nicolas Miranda is a Berklee School of Music dropout who, like his flat-pickin’ hero David Grier, can’t resist bending the boundaries of his genre.  Longtime fans of bluegrass and acoustic music in the Northwest will recognize Peter Schwimmer as a truly world-class banjo player who can play in the box, out of the box and all over the box.  Jason Mellow and I played together in Cross-eyed Rosie, and he's a talented upright and electric player who is comfortable in any genre.  This one-time all-star quartet will be joining forces for a shoot-from-the-hip romp through our favorite musics.

Where we’re heading today

Your body is full of energy, running through your limbs and organs and life.  When you’re with people who think and feel like you and value what you do you are in your comfort zones in the world.  The single biggest common values I see in the modern world – in spades in just about every nook and cranny  – fall into three basic categories that for shorthand I’ll call roots, feelings and thoughts.  There’s more, but we’ll get to that.  If you’re aware of these three things you can make it a long way in the world.

Roots are basically human communities we’re heavily committed to and involved with.  We’ve got groups coming out the wazoo, don’t we?  I and the people I meet identify ourselves by things like last name, the city state or geographic government we support (or don’t, but we’ll still notice), clan, company, brand or fashion preference, race, gender, educational institution, military history, social organizations, tax bracket, etc.  Maybe I don’t meet a lot of folks, but these things seem pretty common factors.  If I understand human history we’ve had this stuff hardwired for tens of thousands of years or more.  We’re aware of the importance of roots.

We understand feelings, too.  Is there an emotion from the depths of sadness, tragedy or anger to the heights of happiness and joy that has not been effectively encapsulated by soap operas, art, music or theater, understood by an audience and rendered cliché through repetition for 3,000 years?  We know about our feelings.

Thoughts are super important these days.  Modern education requires us to imprint information on our memories and repeat it for use when required, an idea mirrored in our daily life.  Our minds are full of letters, numbers, symbols, addresses, pin numbers, phone numbers, passwords, financial amounts, speed limits, public laws and countless pieces of information about how our complex world works.  We need to know and manage all of it, or at least enough to function.  Industry, architecture and urban living have spread on earth like hotcakes over the past 100 years.  If you’ve managed to turn on a computer and read this you’ve already succeeded in using your thoughts in myriad ways.

We’re able to do more than these three and we know it.  The number one new thing we’re waking up to – more than anything else right now, and I’ll prove it – is…

Stuff you may not know about energy work

Every day out in the world you pick up energy that isn’t yours, from that weirdo at the bus stop (sorry, that was me), from that jerk on the road (my bad), that lady in the grocery store (I was hoping to keep that a secret!) or keeping up with the news (lots of happy stories that directly affect you, right?).   When it sticks with you after they’re gone, you’ve picked something up or stirred up your own stuff.  You also accumulate all kinds of junk in the course of your week from frustrations or disappointments at work, at home and the like. 

All of these things usually slough off in the first several minutes of a healing session.  From there we unpack heavier baggage, the more persistent energies we carry with us.  This is the stuff that shapes your life long-term.  By the time you’ve got an illness, injury, emotional turmoil or chronic disorder in your body, the blocks and imbalances you carry with you have been at work a long time.  Energy work charges, clears, balances and restructures your energy field to help you unwind, heal, and in some cases even reverse conditions and ailments.

This is not a get-out-of-jail-free card and I don’t promise miracles, but yes, Toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore.  Some of you know this from experience already, some are still skeptical, but for all of you, I’m ready when you are.

It's Big Show Time with a Double CD Release! 

On his birthday weekend, Brad Creel & the Reel Deel celebrate release their new CD, “Probably Not”.   I love Brad, his music and humor, and so does the Portland Mercury, who said "Gifted with the pen, the punch line, and the guitar, Creel is a vulnerable performer with a deep sense of humor.”The Reel Deel consists of local guitar and mandolin wizard Sat Atma Singh, Ben Grosscup on bass, drummer Mark Pederson, and (Angels & Devils Alike engineer & designer) Tom Frisch on keyboards.  The new CD also features local musicians Chris Funk (of the Decemberists) on pedal steel, Thad Beckman on guitar, and Chris Kokesh (of Misty River) on fiddle.

I also officially released my new full electric-band disk PLAY IN THE YARD on my birthday in January this year, on the edge of sabbatical.  Now that I'm back, let's celebrate!  My band at the show and on the album are virtuoso blues-fusion guitarist Jim McKeon, bassist Tyler Smith and drummer Andrew Love.  Last year we holed up at a cabin in Trout Lake, WA and laid down an entire album basically in one take - and it is GOOD.

Here on the LinkList you know me as a songwriter and performer, but have you been over to visit my website’s Healing page? 

Truth be told, I'm not actually a trained musician - I'm trained as an energy healer.  I have taken clients sporadically for years and most recently was on staff at the Sister’s Folk Festival Americana Song Academy as their resident healer.  During my sabbatical it became clear that it’s time to offer healing work directly. 

Don’t worry, I’m still playing music, the two are entirely extensions of the same thing for me.  You know what it feels like to be moved by a piece of my music.  With healing work I move energy as well, but my hands are the instrument.  It’s just me and an audience of one, and we can address specific issues more deeply.  I simply love this work!  The best part is that this work can be performed over any distance.  For all of you who don’t live in the Portland, OR area and can’t see me in person, read on for more information about healing work at a distance.

While I'm getting established I am offering one-hour sessions for donation!  You'll know in an hour if the work is effective for you and you can offer whatever you feel is appropriate.  Starting November 1^st, my usual rate of $90/hour will apply, so whether you are a seasoned recipient or just want to check out what I do, now is an excellent time to experience energy work!

More about energy healing

Energy healing works from the idea that everything is essentially made up of vibrations of energy.  Each of us has our own energy field influencing every aspect of our lives. We can sense and affect this field directly.  As a healer I work with clients to charge, clear, balance and restructure their energy field.  Energy work can help with physical, mental, emotional and spiritual recovery, healing and growth, and to improve your relationships and day-to-day well-being.  It is an excellent complement to traditional and non-traditional treatments like Western and Eastern medicine, chiropractic, massage therapy, homeopathy, naturopathy, counseling and more.  I have helped clients reduce stress and the patterns that cause it, heal from emotional and physical trauma, headaches/migraines, infections, ease the effects of chronic disease and disease treatments, speed recovery from illness, injury or surgery, cope with divorce, death and emotional upheaval, and grow personally and spiritually.  No two sessions are alike.  I cannot guarantee what will occur for you, but most of the people with whom I work experience increased well-being and improvement.

Hi Everyone,

It is soooo good to be back in the NW.  I realize I said the same thing last LinkList and the time before that too, but I'm feeling it.  And I'm here to contribute.

Chris Kokesh and I are excited to be kicking the month off together again on the stage at the Old Liberty Theater headlining the wonderful BirdFest and Bluegrass Festival.  Gonna be a weekend filled with some of the best picking in the NW.  This year the fam and I are going to make a day of it in Ridgefield, there's so much going on.  Come join in the fun!

Last year I took a weekend at a cabin in Trout Lake with some of the guys from The Rocktet and *pop*, made an electric album.  We're finally going to celebrate PLAY IN THE YARD in November in a double cd-release party with Brad Creel and the Reel Deel.  To warm up, Jim, Tyler, Andy and I are doing back-to-back shows, in Salem 10/15 and Portland 10/16.  It's what I do best, turned to 11.

Acoustic guitarist Nicolas Miranda and I are rounding out the month with a Halloween Haunting at McMenamin's Edgefield.  Costumes, goodies, and yes, acoustic MJ covers.  Come show off your ‘holiday spirits’, we’ll be waiting for you… Mwah Ha Ha Ha Haaaa...!

Hi Everyone,

So fun to be back in the NW.  The past month of shows and friends has really reminded me why I returned.  I just travelled around the world and across the country and truly believe that we live in the best place on earth. 

Things continue for me this month starting Sunday at the Portland Center for Spiritual Living, then the entire next week I’ll be resident healer at the Sisters Folk Festival Americana Song Academy, then returning to open up with Chris Kokesh for one of our favorite singer/songwriters, a beautiful soul named Ellis, and finally playing a sold out houseconcert with Jan Hutchison.  As if that’s not enough you must come to Cross-eyed Rosie’s last dance at the Laurelthirst in Portland on 9/11.  It really will be our last hurrah, there are no presales, its only $8 and it will be packed.  Come early and stay long!
